PCOS Is Now PMOS: New Name, Bigger Picture

PCOS has officially entered a new era with a new name: Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, or PMOS. In this episode, we break down why the name changed, what it means, and why words matter when it comes to diagnosis, treatment, and feeling understood.
For years, “polycystic ovary syndrome” caused confusion because not everyone with the condition has ovarian cysts, and the name made it sound like a problem limited to the ovaries. PMOS tells a fuller story: this condition can involve multiple hormones, insulin resistance, irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, fertility concerns, weight changes, and long-term metabolic health.
We’ll talk about why experts and patient advocates pushed for the change, how the new name may improve awareness and care, and what patients should know moving forward. Same condition, better name, bigger conversation.
This episode is for anyone who has PCOS, PMOS, loves someone who does, or has ever thought, “Wait… why is it called that?”
